The thing is, they BOTH probably had SYG priveldge under the law. So would two guys who were both armed who perceived each other as a threat, as long as they could make some case for it being reasonable. Say one guy hears a scream from an alley, and goes down into it with his gun drawn. Another guy sees him running around with a gun and thinks he’s about to shoot someone— commit a violent felony— and so he pulls his gun and tell the first guy to drop his. With a gun trained on him, the first guy can make a reasonable case that he’s in fear for his life, and shoot the second guy— and the second guy can shoot the first guy, because this law exists, so he knows the first guy has the legal right to shoot him.
