I have a complicated relationship with the RCC. I love their advocacy for the impoverished, immigrants, and others but their ingrained homophobia and sexism bother me equally as well as the cover-ups of the child abuse.

It does appear that Pope Francis is trying to get to the bottom of the abuse scandals and root them out.

The Catholic Church as an institution has a very long history and like all institutions tend to resist change. That said, the Pope is trying to move it in the right direction.

Moreover, the Catholic Church isn’t the only church with those problems. Protestant churches do it too. The Catholic Church makes a better target for folks that don’t like them.
