Lot of those barrier islands are going to be smashed. I have no idea why the hell development is still allowed.

The allure of the sea. It’s beautiful along the coast, right until the next hurricane or Nor’easter rearranges the coastline like the finger of god.

Barrier islands should be turned into preserves and new construction denied. After storms, rebuilding should not be allowed - but owners compensated for cost to relocate inland.

Of course, that’s all easier said than done, especially in places like NYC metro, where millions of people are on the flood plain.

But we can do better to make it safer for those who live here by requiring stronger building codes, better infrastructure, and wetlands protection to reduce flooding inland.
