I’m by no stretch wealthy, but when I donate to my alma maters, I direct where and how the money is to be used (like to specific programs and/or career placement services, etc.) but when I give to other charities, I don’t make any limitations. It’s no different for wealthy folks - they can give restricted or unrestricted donations. Depends on who the person is, the charity, etc.

I think people want to put their $ to good use. If you have a higher level of trust in an organization or charity you may not feel the need to be specific about how it is spent.
