When I was a kid visiting my dad’s TV repair shop, I told him I could hear the whine of the flyback transformers in a TV set (they operate at close to 20 kHz, IIRC). He couldn’t.

In my 40s, I could hear up to 17 kHz, but my physics students could hear higher freqs. Now, I think I’d be lucky to hear above 14 kHz. I checked one time using an audio generator for Windows. No joy.

Once had a coworker who refused to go into certain offices because of the whine from the flybacks. Nobody else could hear anything. Guess that’s the silver lining to getting older.
