Growing up in a small town with a bit of industry and a local airport we were a marginal tertiary target at most. No, we just knew we were downwind from Minneapolis-St. Paul & the Dakota missile fields. We’d die slower in the grey fallout snow that would smother Northern Wisconsin in it’s shroud. Rather like “On The Beach” but without the race car to commit suicide in.

That’s why I joined the Army in 1982. I really thought Reagan would start WWIII and I figured I’d rather die fast in a tank in Germany even before the missiles flew than slowly of radiation poisoning.
