Grandma Bacon had a Maytag wringer washer that she used until it finally died in 1984 and she couldn’t get a repairman to fix it.

We had one like that when we lived on The Bluff in the ’50s. I burned a 1/16th inch crater in the rampy part when my attempt to recharge a 6vdc dry cell with 110vac went bad. “Why didn’t the circuit breaker pop?” you might ask. Old houses didn’t have circuit breakers, they had molded glass fuses. And the fuse didn’t fuse because poor peoples’ houses had carefully-aligned pennies bridging the hot and neutral fittings.
