I would point out that during the campaign Obama was criticized for being a blank slate, a chameleon, a hopenchanger, a candidate who would speak out of both sides of his mouth at the drop of a hat. If those criticisms had validity, then one could argue that his mandate is kind of shaky.
I also think that Obama`s footdragging on a number of promises would leave him open to the charge that his mandate was for speedy change and a new approach in Washington, and so he has no mandate to maintain the status quo.
