People often foolishly fall into extreme positions on this. With proper checks and balances unions can be a very good thing. Without them you get either no unions and employees getting screwed, or in opposite circumstances you get unions so powerful that can get utterly unreasonable benefits, as in the fixed benefit pension fiasco we have in California. Checks and balances are critical, seemingly too nuanced for the media and ratings seeking pundits to address.
What can be done that reasonably limits the power of unions?
Do you have any suggestions?
