Two spaces was - still is, if I recall correctly - the standard for typewritten communications. Just because the iPhone automatically adds a . after typing two spaces does not mean that’s how it’s supposed to be. IIRC, it only became “standard” to type a single space after the period because original text communications were so limited.
I understand the double space was because the symbols on a typewriter are all the same size, so it was hard to tell the difference between the end of a sentence and spacing between words. Because of kerning with computer systems, the double space isn’t needed anymore. At least that’s the rationale I hear.
It did take me a while to break the double space habit, especially since I learned to type on a typewriter.
