I don’t think people in the past were kinder or more generous. People tend to be kind and generous to people they perceive to be like themselves.

That is why the traditional praise of Southern hospitality is irritating. Southern hospitality — Southern charm — was always limited to those who were white. They had no problems with separate but “equal”.
