Stalin was a crazed murderous dictator who was as bad as or maybe worse than Hitler, but the truth is that Russia was driving Germany into the pit before the first American platoon arrived in Europe. That’s what bothers me so much about our typical war movies showing how we beat the Krauts.

The Russian Winter won that war, really. Hitler’s best armies lay frozen before the gates of Moscow, on the shores of Lake Ladoga, and in the streets of Stalingrad. The American/British/Free French coalition really proved its worth as a distraction to prevent the Nazis from moving the rest of their forces eastward, which would have only delayed the inevitable.
