I graduated from high school in 1973 just when the Bowmar Brain calculators were hitting the market costing $500. And when I started at Pitt in the fall of 1973 HP calculators were just coming on the market and their cost was so high that the Pitt Bookstore sold them on an installment plan that added $1000 to the tuition bill.

BTW when I started at Pitt, tuition was $485 per trimester and the same amount was charged for room and board. Now the tuition starts at over $18,000 and do NOT even ask how much room and board is.

Oh I thought paying off an undergraduate loan amount of $8,250 was a pain in the ass…Kids now graduating with a debt of $100K Plus…

But this is the result of the Powell Memorandum putting college out of reach for kids and keeping the masses dumbed down.

College was out of reach for kids before the Powell Memorandum. I graduated in 1978 and was accepted to a number of colleges. My mother plainly told me “I can’t afford it.”

Though I was the salutatorian of my class, college was out-of-reach. I was accepted to the colleges I applied to; my family could not afford any.

Instead, it was the high seas and Haze Grey Cruise Lines for me.
