The South had great generals, what they lacked were junior-grade line officers and especially staff officers who could transmit orders without getting them lost as was the case leading up to Antietam, which was only saved through McClellan’s incompetence and dithering.

If Grant or Sherman had been in charge of the Army of the Potomac at Antietam, Lee would never have made it back to Virginia, and the War might’ve ended two years earlier. Again, not Lincoln’s fault.
