Misleading about the Obama-era IRS scandal, since the IRS did examine all kinds of political entities, not just TP groups. It was the Congressional ask that fixated on TP.
The TIGTA made that much clear. GOPers fixated on the TP angle, ignoring that progressives also caught up.— lawhawk #maskingforafriend (@lawhawk) July 10, 2020
As for Trump insisting that the IRS investigate exempt status of all universities, the IRS will get right on that once they have funding to do so.
Not that they’d find any wrongdoing, because all of them fulfill the requirement as an exempt entity - educational purposes.— lawhawk #maskingforafriend (@lawhawk) July 10, 2020
Magic balance bulkshit.
The IRS looking into the TP groups getting exempt status was not the same as Trump insisting that all universities be investigated and lose exempt status.
For starters, the IRS didn’t just look at TP groups. The GOPers in Congress wanted to know only if the TP groups were being investigated. IRS said they were. Turns out they were, along with progressive groups too. The GOP framed it as a witch hunt on right wing groups.
Congress punted when the IRS insisted they clarify the law. So the IRS is left to muddle through. These kinds of groups proliferated in wake of CU decision.
