re: #276 Spare O’Lake

Have you forgotten 1973?

Sorry, since the “Yom Kippur war,” not the “Six Day war” is what I should have said. If you’re old enough that 1967 and 1973 make a huge diffence to you, then I apologize for my inability to tell late 60’s Mideast politics from early 70’s mideast politics. I’m sure that most people would understand how they are significantly different today.

But when I said “Syria hasn’t had the guts to actually throw down.” I was just responding to someone else, with whom you should perhaps direct your objections, who said:

re: #201 Spare O’Lake

Israel has never been at peace with Syria.

I know of no Israel/Syria war either since back when Sid ‘n Marty Kroft were all the rage (Gen X’ers, are ya with me?) so I’m going to say that whatever lack of peace that Israel and Syria have had since back in the day also constitutes no more than a “cold war.” Or, whatever lack of open hosilities have occurred constitute the same.

Again, I may not be entirely informed on the issues on the ground, so if Israel and Syria have had open conflict since “the Space Nuts” was on Saturday mornings, please do let me know.

Until then, I’m going to assume that a cold peace is assumed, and that a real peace is the goal for both sides.

From what I can gather about Jimmy Carter’s take on the “Plight of the Palestinians” (TM). There are two sets of standards, one for the Israelis, another for the Palistinians. Its the soft racism of lowered expectations.

Yes.

The fact is, Palestinians have to carry special identification cards that identify them as second class citizens subject to higher security standards. It’s literally apartheid: two classes of citizenry who are treated differently in the same country. If you live in the nation called “Israel” and happen to be a Palestinian, then a completely different set of laws apply to you than to an “Israeli citizen.” The word for that is: Apartheid. If you disagree, then imagine that the same situation was playing out in any other country besides Israel. It would be apartheid. It is apartheid.
