The GOP are screwed because they are beholden to Trump, the GOP base, and to the billionaires boys club, in that order. They’ve set themselves down this path of wickedness and awful policies that harm the nation, and Trump’s created a cult of personality in his own Cabinet, complete with using acting cabinet officials to get around Congressional confirmation process.

None of this is acceptable in the best of times, and Trump is violating all the norms and standards with a pliant GOP rubber stamping this.

Who isn’t rubber stamping it?

Nancy and the Democrats. And Nancy has a strategy in place should Trump declare a national emergency - and it spit roasts the GOP - forces them to take a position. They can either support Trump and his illicit and bogus claims about a national emergency even they know doesn’t exist but which the rabid GOP base wants because it keeps the nonwhites out, or block Trump and suffer the consequences.

This is what you get when you get a party that sees power as an end to itself, and doesn’t care about anything else. Facts, law, or reasoning are out the window.

That would explain why McConnell apparently told him to back off the national emergency stuff. In even a relatively sane world (like pre-2016), there’s little chance a president can survive declaring a national emergency when one truly does not exist, and Congress has repeatedly voted against the policy he’s seeking to declare said emergency to institute. I don’t know what happens now, but I hope that there’s enough sane people among the Senate GOP caucus to do the right thing.
