re: #32 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

The notion is that public transit should be a viable option. I know plenty of people in the big city who don’t own cars, on the odd occasion they need one, they rent one from a car-sharing agency, and do not have to worry about where to park it when they are done.

Understood, but the way it’s worded goes way beyond that. I take public transport to work 90% of the time, because it’s convenient and more pleasant than sitting in traffic, and for some cities like Amsterdam, Paris, or London it’s crazy to drive there when you can just take the high-speed train.

But still most people here have at least one car, and it’s not reasonable to think that US private car ownership is all going to go away because a bunch of US cities have decent public transport again. We have to work on both public transport and lower-impact private transport.
