Svante August Arrhenius first described and discussed the Greenhouse effect in 1896.

In that paper, he used an number of astronomical observations and the Setphan Bolzman law to calculate the rise in temperature due to the trapping of black body radiation by atmospheric CO2

I can’t find a link to the original paper.
