Well, that is literally what Trump thinks. Debate are about showmanship and putting your opponents in their place. Showing how dominant you are.

But the idea that the media should NOT serve as neutral fact checkers? That’s bizarre. I understand that Trump’s working the refs as he always does, but Conway’s statement goes a step beyond that, indicating it’s not the role of the media to look at the two sides and find the truth.

What, then, IS their role?

Trump and his campaign seem to have decided that the argument here is a debate is not for hashing out the differences between the candidates, it’s for him standing upon the stage, acting like a loud and boorish asshole while she wilts under the spotlights. Somebody apparently dropped a history book that opened onto the page about the Kennedy/Nixon debate and they decided “There! That’s our strategy! Make her sweat on TV and it’s all over and done with!”
