Not that unusual, and not just recent. Years ago a Guatemalan acquaintance commented that she wasn’t happy that her kids were picking up Mexican Spanish at school. I imagine it’s just a case of “we’re better than our neighbors” which is pretty common everywhere.

I had 4 years of Spanish in HS, but I’m no longer fluent, due to disuse.
