re: #326 Interesting Times

Certainly sounds like it. Contrast this with Adam Lanza, oh-so-well-trained by his gun-nut mother, who managed to kill nearly everyone he shot within minutes. And given how inexperienced this woman in Atlanta seemed to be, the situation could have easily turned tragic had the intruder been able to get the gun from her (and I’d like to see stats on how often that happens - a homeowner’s gun being used against them - versus them using it successfully for self-defense)

For self-defense situations like this, I want to see development of an instantly incapacitating but non-lethal weapon, like the tranquilizer guns wildlife officers use. But why do I have the feeling something like that is restricted as all hell, while flesh-ripping ammo is as easy to get as candy?

The reason traq rounds are restricted is twofold:

1. Fear that they might be misused as a way to quickly deal with someone who is merely being obstreperous. “Pissed at your neighbor for yelling at you over your music? Traq him, problem solved.” This is a comparatively minor concern, however.

2. The bigger concern is that such rounds would be misused to incapacitate people in order to abduct or exploit them, and the danger here is mostly to women. Traq rounds could become tools in a rapist’s arsenal to knock out his victim or at least prevent her from resisting.

The other problem with traq rounds is that they are easily defeated by something like a thick coat. Firing a projectile at someone coming at you that does not kill or seriously wound him is worse than useless, since all you’ll have done is piss him off.
