I understand. But then the fact that it is depressing and unpleasant speaks to why some of that type of art was such a challenge for the time.

And what is ugly in the content is the artist painting many religious topics of the day trying to capture the frightening stuff that many religious texts contain.

Depicting some of the ‘judgement’ stories from the bible into visual forms was probably not a popular thing. They are not pretty. The fact artists of the late 15th century were starting to be ‘political’ in meaning was a dangerous thing to many.

I love art that may not be pretty, and is black in content as a powerful and beautiful statement. In a way I love art that can be a bit like guerrilla warfare or a strong protest song.
