I am still trying to reconcile the Trump nomination in my own mind. This is the third time since the 1960s that the GOP has decided not to pick the “next guy in line”. In 1964 they went with Goldwater (and it was a disaster in that cycle but they rebounded in ‘68, in part because of LBJ’s South East Asian misadventures). In 2000 they went with GWB (a disaster in a different way, but there was also no identifiable “next guy in line” in that election). Now they’re going with Trump. My gut tells me that it’ll be a disaster because it’s Trump - but I still wonder what kind of turnout we will see come November; because as I’ve been saying for a while, historically high negatives for both major party nominees suggests a low turnout election, and then all bets are off.

I believe instead that Trump is such a polarizing figure that he will drive a lot of people to the polls to vote against him.
