Speaking as a NJ homeowner, I think part of the issue is the fact that a huge chunk of your property tax goes to education. In my case, over 55%. It’s part of the reason taxes are so high in the state in general.

Many New Jerseyites, displaying the incisive critical thinking that Americans are renown for, immediately leap to the conclusion that every teacher is a millionaire who only works 2/3 of the year. They’re the reason your taxes are too high.

Factor in the basic American hatred of education, plus teacher tenure and presto: your conservative scapegoat is ready to serve.

And, as I’ve said before, I’ve met teachers who wholeheartedly endorse Christie. There are people in the state who vote for a man that has vowed to make their careers as difficult as possible.

There are some weird political outlooks in the state.

Good factoring, there. When we lived in Sussex County we felt the property tax, but also quit going to our favorite pizza bar from embarrassment for our kid’s elementary school teacher, who had to moonlight as a waitress.
