I lived in Amarillo a million years ago (mid to late 80s). It wasn’t filled with a bunch of wild-eyed Fred Phelps types, but it was definitely gripped with the Satanic Panic that was popular at the time. Symptoms of Satanic cult activity parents were told by the local police to watch for included wearing black socks or listening to heavy metal.

It was the kind of place where the “right” kind of person could get probation for intentionally killing the “wrong” kind of person in a gang fight.
