Sterling did not have a weapon in his hand when Officer Howie Lake shouted “gun!” and Officer Blane Salamoni fired six shots into his chest.

I get the feeling that when Lake found the gun in Sterling’s pocket and, shouted “Gun!” , Salamoni interpreted it as the suspect had pulled a gun, even though it made no sense in the context, and fired without engaging his brain. It doesn’t take ill-will to kill someone, though the ill-will of racism may be a factor here, but just the combination of incompetence and a gun. I’ve met some very stupid cops.
