He has been a jerk his whole life. Compassion has never really been a part of his character. His ego has always been way too big to allow thinking of others.

Well, not defending douchebaggery, but he was a naval aviator, which makes saying he has a giant ego a tautology. It’s sort of a requirement for that job.
