That was part of it, though some German-Americans were interned. But many others fought for the USA. The 83rd Infantry Division (The Rag-Tag Circus) had enough german-speakers to organize an infiltration company that was used to try to capture a bridge across the Rhine. The assault failed: though it came close to the bridge, the ruse was detected and they bridge demolished before they could cross.
