Doesn’t getting a court-appointed attorney depend on being dead broke, though? I thought I watched a Youtube video recently where a judge was asking if a woman didn’t have some jewelry she could sell in order to raise money for an attorney. I got the impression that the state wants to make sure you own _nothing_ before they foot the bill.

Different rules in different states. Here, there is a process to certify indigency.
