One of the major reason that Roger Stone’s Alexander flopped so disastrously was because it approached his homosexuality in a matter-of-fact way, which is how it was seen and accepted Classic cultures. Americans were somehow not ready to have their ancient history presented to them like that.
Good point; Alexander’s sexuality was certainly common knowledge and in Classical cultures, it wasn’t considered scandalous. That didn’t really happen until Christianity came along.
