Germans, at least the ones I’ve met, do have a culture that to some extent is based on scrupulously avoiding militarism and nationalism. I understand where it comes from.

Another American and I once scared hell out of some German friends by demonstrating the Pledge of Allegiance (someone had seen it in an American movie, and wanted to know more). They were really disturbed, but didn’t want to be rude. Distinctly awkward.

The Canadian in the room broke up the nervous silence by launching into an off-key rendition of “O Canada”.

So here’s a question for yourself and others who have had euro-experiences. What if anything is that group of countries going to stand up for? And does Obama have a chance in hell of getting them to work in a positive role? Will their demographics doom them?
