I thought what a lot of Democrats believe is that America agrees with their stances, but will never vote for a dirty liberal to get them done.

In the 80s, during my childhood, “liberal” became a dirty word, or at least a smear. Democrats, for whatever reason, rather than trying to defend themselves and their ideology/positions, decided to run away from the word. Instead they took up the mantle of “progressive” or a variety of other labels. They acted like they were ashamed of what they believed in. And people don’t want to vote for someone that’s ashamed of their beliefs.
