To be fair, I grew up in a household where it was a sin to even suggest you liked a Democrat because both my folks had served through the Carter years and thought that Democrats absolutely hated the military. And while I did get swept up in the post-9/11, Lee Greenwood “God Bless the USA” stupidity, I did eventually get my head straight and recognize the very dark and rotten heart at the center of modern American conservatism.

So there is hope for that child, but he faces a very rough road going forward.

I served in the military in over half of Carter’s administration. That whole “Democrats hate the military” lie was alive and well for conservatives (who were not in the military, those in the military knew better).
