What made Beto’s response to that question so beautiful was his insistence that the people getting beaten for the Woolworth lunch counter sit-ins, or on the Edmund Pettis Bridge, or the people who rode the buses in Freedom Summer — were also putting their lives on the line for their country and for freedom, and plenty of them died too. Peaceful protest is “fighting for your country, fighting for freedom” just as much as serving in the military or the police force, and they deserve the same respect.
