re: #305 The Shadow Do
Kill him, just sayin…
Eye for an eye isn’t enough of a reason for me. If I lost a loved one I would certainly pine for vengeance. But the death penalty doesn’t do anything other than satiate that desire—it advances no other goals of a justice system. It doesn’t deter crime, and it is costly because everyone agrees safeguards, appeals, etc need to be preserved to prevent killing an innocent person.
And I cannot imagine how many innocent people have been killed—just read up on how many death row cases were commuted or dismissed after DNA evidence came into practice. We can never guarantee that we only kill the guilty in such a process. At least life in prison gives us the option of letting the person go if we later find out were wrong.
