I read The Emigrants a couple years ago-the rest of the series is probably less relevant than the first one. As I recall it takes place a couple decades before my grandfather was born (1868), and things must have lightened up a bit by the late 1880s when he became a Free Church minister. He may well found greener pastures religiously as well as economically in North America.

The Swedes who came over then were economic refugees, like many other immigrants of the XIXth. Now, some of their descendants want to keep out darker-skinned people who are economic refugees, and political refugees, because darker skin.
