I started thinking up a theory to explain Donny’s latest pantsing over Mexican tariffs. It went that he’d ordered DHS to come up with an agreement months ago, back when the “soft” team was in charge, and they came up with what was just “signed” on Friday. But Donny and/or Miller declared it “wasn’t enough” and so fired the “soft” DHS team in favor of a “tough” one that would press Mexico for greater concessions.

Well, after months of Mexico refusing to budge, Donny decided to play “Deal Maker” and threaten tariffs in an effort to scare concessions out of them. He made all sorts of noise about how he was gonna go through with those tariffs, that he was gonna punish Mexico, and he was gonna get them to agree to “tough” measures. But they called his bluff and continued to stand by the earlier agreement, while political pressure at home mounted for him to back off on tariffs or else hurt his own party going into elections next year. So he or somebody in the White House got Mexico to say this agreement would be the “start” of something bigger, which gave Donny the out to say he’d managed to make an awesome deal with them.

…but then I realized that such a plan would require a man of much greater skill, so concluded it was probably somebody else who once again saved the man from himself.
