prison costs was the underlying reason behind the recent push in IN to lower the drug sentences. Prosecutors freaked and it went nowhere.

If we just reserved prison for violent offenders, it would ease the burden so much.

Put non-violent drug offenders in rehab or halfway houses where they get their GED and/or learn a trade. There’s no reason someone should be in prison for being an addict. If they’re violent? Sure. Lock them up. But not just for having or using drugs.

Too bad that will never happen.
