I’ve long contended that Trump’s difficult elecotrally was really any Republicans. So many states they have to gain back from Obama. Even when Bush won in 2004, it was by one state. Now, I no doubt think Rubio and Kasich especially would be doing better against Clinton but I think they would have ran into their own problems. I have no idea what a Clinton versus Marco Rubio or John Kasich debate would look like. I’m sure both would conduct themselves like adults but those two had their own problems that I think Clinton would have exploited in the campaign.

It’s going to take several more cycles for demographics to really sink the GOP at the national level. Until then, any presidential race that can be made to look like a generic Republican vs. a weak Democrat will be dangerously easy to lose. Obama 2008, Obama 2012, Clinton 2016 is a streak of strong (D) candidates that may not last as long as required to prevent a GOP lunatic from becoming president.
