He was told “Don’t act do that, it’s against church doctrine” and he did it anyways. His actions should therefore be consider in the same light as civil disobedience.
The Methodists booted him in order to maintain their line against gay marriage, and thus avoid a schism. If the church allowed gay weddings, a large number of more conservative congregations would promptly flounce out the door.
I’m not saying the church is right, just supplying the context.
