You summed it up: Cruz has not been around long enough to do anything indictable and he has so far said only things that please the base.

The ideal GOP candidate is a bit of blank slate onto which voters can project their image of an what they want in a candidate.

The main problem Cruz faces is that there’s just no way he can soften his position on gay rights or abortion. The most he can probably do is stop calling birth control pills “abortifacients,” but it’s not like he’s going to actually reverse that stance either. He’s so massively socially conservative that general election voters will be overwhelmingly turned off, which means in a two way race he’ll still pull down the 35% or so of GOP dead enders and maybe another 5 to 10 percent on top of that at the absolute most. Minorities, gays and most women will run screaming from the guy.

On top of everything else he just as a very weird and off putting appearance, like Liberace mated with Joseph McCarthy.
