Some of my paternal ancestors lived in Arkansas and were mixed-race Union supporters. They got burned out of their home by Confederate partisans in the winter of 1863-64 and had to walk something like 100 miles to Fort Smith with pretty much just the clothes on their backs. It was ugly.
