Most of them are under a mountain of debt that they are afraid will sink them if they don’t get a high paying job.

And btw, the Democrats here are as guilty as the Republicans. By stressing that the reason to go to college is to get a good paying job, the goal now is to get a good paying job, and failing that becomes a critical life failure.

I missed the protest era of the Vietnam war in college. When I went to school we just had to worry about Carter then Reagan. It was not a very motivating time for college students to protest anything.

The increase in personal debt (both college students and in general) now guarantees that individuals will feel forced to comply with whatever their employers/government tells them to do.

Yeah, this is the thing that most of the hand-wringing about the collapse of the middle class, the flattening of earnings growth, usually overlooks. Individual debt is through the roof. Certainly is for me. Trying to correct it, but it’s slow going.
