re: #29 wheat-dogg, raker of forests, master of steam

Thanks!

I had family in Cincinnatti. And yes, they viewed south of the Ohio as ‘Southern’ and rural. So the mirror image of what you describe.

I have not had a chance to look it up, but iirc, there was also a pro-abolitionist newspaper in Cincinnati pre-Civil War. And a large group of pro-slavery men from Kentucky came and laid siege to the editor who was holed up in the building. I do not remember if they succeeded in brning the building down or destroying the presses. But I do seem to remember that he had a cannon at the front door with caused them some trepidation.

My ex was from southern Virginia. Her family descended from well to do plantation owners. Her parents still lived on the land. And until the late 20th Centiry, some of the slave cabins (one room shacks) were still standing. It only got electricity in the late 1940’s.

But her family was actually quite cosmopolitan and had moved on as of the WW2 and baby boomer generations.

In Virginia, there are still those who think that somehow their lives would be better, somehow, under the Confederacy. Mostly poorer white folks filled with anger at their personal situation. And responding with emotion as they usually cannot describe how they would be better off.
