Wife and I came in at the end of that era. After one tense fried chicken dinner I (Spec4) asked him (Master SGT) for permission to marry. I knew I had to ask, he knew he had to grant it.

My father-in-law granted me permission conditional on having a Bible study with him every week, which I was fine with. It was uncomfortable, but I knew I could survive it for the length of time required (it was like 1-2 months) and the reward of getting to marry his gorgeous, crazy smart, and ferocious youngest girl. The funny thing is, even after the incident with the speech, I was still the favorite son-in-law.
