I always thought it was odd that Fillmore carried Maryland as the Know-Nothing since at that time, after Louisiana, Maryland was probably the most Catholic state in the Union and the Know-Nothing’s appeal was to Anti-Catholicism. Granted Maryland’s Catholics were mostly English-American Catholics who had long been established in the US but I digress.
