Which isn’t what happened with Franken, or what anyone is suggesting.
It is exactly what happened with Franken. Gillibrand stirred up a mob to force his resignation based upon nothing more than accusations. You can sit here and argue the “credibility” of those accusations all you like, but the fact remains that the man never had an opportunity to defend himself because doing so would be construed as an act of guilt.
