See, your post here, I agree with. I have never truly been comfortable with the idea of completely autonomous, driverless cars. And it’s obvious that the “safety driver” concept as Uber implemented it isn’t working the way it needs to. What I disagree with is the contention that the design of this automated driving system is fundamentally flawed, and that it should not have been used. I would argue instead that the liability lies in the failure to define the true capabilities of the system in a controlled environment prior to live-environment testing. To me, the problem wasn’t in the technology itself, but in its being put to use without clear definition of what it can and can’t do, resulting in there being significant doubt about what actually happened. Don’t blame Uber for not building a car that could see this pedestrian; blame Uber for not developing a comprehensive training and information program for a potentially highly dangerous system.
