I don’t know how Mayer is as a person, but as a historian he flirted with Holocaust revisionism at one time, making certain unsubstantiated claims about the number of Auschwitz victims and listing Faurisson and Butz among his sources.

Yes, he’s taken an iconoclastic interpretation of the Holocaust, which has gotten him in trouble with many of his fellow Jews. He’s also sharply critical of Israel, with the expected backlash. I’m not saying I am agreeing with him, but I admire his independence. I regret not taking any of his courses.
